Thornton gives the Mets the right angle
MLB.com lists rookie left-hander Zac Thornton for Saturday on an extra day of rest, with no reported workload cap or physical concern. He has avoided another major blowup since his May debut and is coming off a solid outing against Houston.
The matchup matters more than any shiny pitch label. Thornton’s left-handed look runs directly into Rafael Devers, Jung Hoo Lee and Bryce Eldridge, three important Giants bats who work from the left side.
Juan Soto is back from his calf-related absence, while Mark Vientos returned from a hand fracture and homered immediately. Their presence lets the Mets arrange the order around established on-base threats instead of asking the young hitters to manufacture every rally.
New York’s recent offense has been volatile rather than consistently hot, but the bullpen entered the series with a recovery day. Kodai Senga also provides a clearer finishing identity than San Francisco’s matchup-based committee, provided Friday night does not consume him.
The Giants are still sorting the pieces
The Giants’ game notes, published at img.mlbstatic.com, list right-hander Anthony Molina as Saturday’s probable starter, though the English MLB feed still showed San Francisco as TBD at the research cutoff. His assignment therefore requires a late check rather than ink in the scorebook.
Molina threw strikes, avoided walks and generated swing-and-miss in his latest outing, his second appearance with the major-league staff. His background moving between Triple-A, relief and starting work makes five useful innings a more realistic target than old-fashioned length.
The larger concern is the order behind him. Willy Adames, Matt Chapman and Marcelo Mayer are unavailable, while deadline movement has turned the roster into an evaluation-heavy mix of rookies and recent call-ups.
Rafael Devers remains the primary mistake-punisher, but Thornton’s handedness reduces his comfort and also complicates Lee’s assignment. The Giants can add right-handed role players, though the injuries have stripped away much of the depth needed for a convincing platoon stack.
Citi Field takes carry out of the equation
First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM ET, with temperatures around 81°F and a north wind near 15 mph. At Citi Field, that breeze comes in from center field toward home plate, suppressing carry to center and the right-center gap.
The deep, irregular right-center sector already asks hitters to square the ball rather than merely lift it. Add an inward wind and marginal airborne contact starts looking like routine outfield work—the sort of arithmetic pitchers enjoy.
This is the second game of the series after a Friday night opener. The turnaround is tougher on a Giants club playing in the third city of its trip, especially if the unsettled bullpen absorbs meaningful mileage before Saturday afternoon.
San Francisco’s scoring ceiling looks cramped
The sharpest angle is not the full-game total or an expensive Mets moneyline. It is San Francisco’s team total, which isolates Thornton’s platoon advantage, the Giants’ reduced supporting cast and conditions built to knock down borderline fly-ball damage.
Thornton can challenge the left-handed core without forcing New York to spend a specialist early, and the Giants lack the healthy right-handed depth to remake the order around him. With the wind trimming the reward for lifted contact, San Francisco may need repeated line drives and clean situational baseball to reach four runs.
The major late risk is Friday’s bullpen usage. If Senga works heavily or the opener becomes an extended close game, the Mets’ finishing plan will be less secure; this relief group recently wasted another solid Thornton start.
