Sonmez is ranked No. 58 and recently recovered to beat Daria Kasatkina 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-3. She also made Coco Gauff work in a 3-6, 4-6 US Open defeat, finding success once she moved forward rather than remaining in neutral baseline exchanges.
Shymanovich has already beaten Ana Sofia Sanchez 7-5, 6-2 here, then led Lea Ma 7-6(1), 3-0 before Ma retired. Those matches exposed some untidy service passages, but they also gave Shymanovich a working measure of the quicker ball flight and rewarded her compact returns.
The ranking gap looks wider than the game line
